DIA, short for Drug Information Association, was established in 1964. Its members include regulatory agencies, academic institutions, biotech and pharmaceutical research and development companies, pharmaceutical companies, contract research organizations (CROs), and medical device companies from over 80 countries. Since the year 2000, the Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE) has been participating in the annual DIA meetings, starting with the 36th DIA Annual Meeting, engaging in global exchanges with drug regulatory authorities.
During the 2006 DIA Annual Meeting, the CDE hosted the inaugural "Taiwan Night" event. This initiative invited overseas residents, Taiwanese nationals, regulatory authorities from various countries, and industry professionals to join together, establishing channels for communication and exchange to highlight Taiwan's soft power in international regulatory science.
2023
The Drug Information Association (DIA) Annual Meeting, the world's largest gathering focused on drug development information and regulatory affairs, hosted its 59th Annual Meeting in 2023 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in the United States. The conference features 21 main themes, including clinical trials, RWD/RWE (Real-World Data/Real-World Evidence), regulatory Town Hall sessions, translational science, regulatory affairs, CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls), patient engagement, statistics, and poster presentations. Officials from regulatory agencies worldwide and industry experts are invited to deliver over 300 presentations. The venue accommodated more than 200 exhibition booths.
In 2023, Taiwan was represented by a delegation of nearly 30 individuals led by Director-General Shou-Mei Wu of the Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Deputy Executive Director Lih-jiuan Hsu from our center. The participation in the conference included setting up the "Maximize Your Clinical Trial Success with Taiwan" exhibition booth to promote Taiwan's clinical trial environment and the achievements of Taiwan's government biotechnology industry promotion program, aiming to enhance policy advocacy and showcase Taiwan's robust capabilities in biotechnology and clinical trials.
At the conference, Section Chief Fong-Chun Huang and Project Manager Chiao-Fu Lai from CDE presented poster papers on topics "Accelerating Cell Therapy Development and Improving Quality in Manufacturing by New Regulation Framework in Taiwan" and "The Benefits of Bridging Study Strategy Consultation in the Taiwan CDE."
Additionally, the CDE assisted Taiwan FDA to host bilateral meetings with U.S. FDA, EMA, PMDA of Japan, MHRA of the UK, ANVISA of Brazil, Swissmedic of Switzerland to exchange insights and experiences in pharmaceutical management. The team also facilitated to organize the "Regulatory Insights into Decentralized Clinical Trial (DCT)" forum, chaired by Director-General Shou-Mei Wu of the Taiwan FDA, featuring speakers such as M. Khair ElZarrad from FDA, Steffen Thirstrup from EMA, Simone Ferbitz-Scheurer from Swissmedic, and Janice Chang from Transcelerate sharing their perspectives and insights on DCT from various countries.
Furthermore, participation in seminars and forums organized by the conference, covering topics like international harmonization of drug regulations, clinical safety and pharmacovigilance, clinical research development, and regulatory affairs, provided insights into international regulatory trends and industry developments.
2022/2021
In 2022, due to the pandemic, we did not participate in the DIA conference. In 2021, the DIA conference originally scheduled for June 27 to July 1 in Philadelphia, USA, was canceled as a face-to-face meeting due to the pandemic and instead transitioned to an online format during the same period. The DIA annual meeting also hosted a virtual exhibition where companies applied for virtual booths and uploaded exhibition materials for visitors to view.
The theme of the Center's exhibition in 2021 was "Taiwan's Clinical Trial Environment and Capability." The exhibition booth featured a cover image incorporating the "Taiwan Clinical Trials Information Platform" website (www.TaiwanClinicalTrials.TW), labeled as "TAIWAN CLINICAL TRIALS," allowing visitors to immediately understand the theme of the exhibition. This initiative aimed to enhance the international visibility of the "Taiwan Clinical Trials Information Platform" website. The booth website also showcased a promotional video titled "Taiwan Your Clinical Trial Solution," highlighting Taiwan's strengths, performance of various clinical trial centers, and information from the Taiwan Clinical Trials Information Platform website to promote Taiwan's clinical trial capabilities domestically and internationally.
